Errol Flynn and Greer Garson head this lush costume drama - based on the first book of John Galsworthy's The Forsyte Saga - about a woman who cannot cut her free spirit to fit the cloth of Victorian society. It's all done with great dignity, but is immensely stuffy and dull. I am a sucker for a great Greer Garrison story, this one did not disappoint, and so many handsome gentlemen to assist in telling her story, can't lose! Flynn could play a villain as well as he could a hero!

The movie is well-filmed, the story is captivating, and it has well developed characters. Love among the Forsytes is strange, full of tradition, melancholy and gold digging in this film treatise on Victorian-age rigidity and vestiges of a flawed society. Reviewed in the United States on July 2, 2014, I understand that Errol Flynn..really fought hard for the role of Soames Forsyte and I am glad that he did...and glad that he stuck to his guns and did'nt back down...I have seen the Masterpiece Theatre version of this done..in 2002 and it was really,really good also..I never saw the orginal..that was B&W and came out in the 1960's which actually launched Masterpiece Theatre...and like alot of other people...did not even know that this one exsisted...until a few years ago...it is just funny..because we have now seen Irene Foryste with blonde,black and now red hair!..but like with everything Greer did,she pulled it off with class...I just wish there was a sequel to this one..because Irene Forsytes life did not just end with a 2 hour movie...like with Mrs.Miniver and the Miniver Story...Hollywood should have done a sequel to this one, Reviewed in the United States on May 23, 2016.
