Travelling or based outside United States? I saw this film many years ago. You would think the single version of this movie would be in it's original widescreen format. The main suspense is: Will there be a 'Lost Adams Mine'?

Gregory Peck and Omar Sharif battle to find a legendary cache of gold in this spectacular Wild West adventure. Reviewed in the United States on December 1, 2017. After much research and reading lots of reviews, I found the widescreen version of Mackenna's Gold on a 2 disc, four movie collection sold here on Amazon. The play off between the Peck and Omar Sharif characters is grand and carries well through to the finish.

Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. But more "phony" is the fact that clearly Caucasian actors play the Native American and Mexican roles (Keenan Wynn plays a guy named "Sanchez"). Mackenna's Gold is one of the most exciting Westerns ever made. Omar Sharif's character is crafty and cunning. Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 3, 2015. . A violent, deadly, merciless quest for a cursed treasure, hidden in a place always hungry for more souls to corrupt and devour, Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 20, 2014. There are some single double-sided flip discs out there which are very rare that have the fullscreen on one side and widescreen on the other. What makes this film "different" is that it clearly runs against the grain of the kind of gritty, "realistic" Westerns being made at the time. Most of the main stars are gone, but this film seems not at all dated--with the exception of Julie Newmar playing a glamorous Indian, who looks like she just walked away from a magazine photo shoot.

Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 16, 2009. The basic plot isn't the problem, or anything special; Gregory Peck is a lawman who happens to learn the whereabouts of a trove of gold, he is captured and held hostage by a Mexican bandit (Omar Sharif) and his gang in order to lead them to the gold, a Cavalry sergeant (Telly Savalas) who is after the bandit but wouldn't mind some of the gold himself, and a bunch of greedy townspeople decide they want into the action as well. Instead of scratching your head over some its more ludicrous aspects, it is best to take it as unseriously as possible--a "throwback" that lost its way. Julie Newmar is one of the most interesting and noteworthy - a lady of stunning looks and fine form. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. The plot is quite extraordinary, getting the outlaw gang, good citizens of the town, and U.S. army troops all involved in the search for the treasure. I always liked very much this highly unusual 1969 western with an ensemble cast and recently I was pleased to see that it didn't age AT ALL. Video availability outside of United States varies. Still, this film isn't exactly a Plan 9 From Outer Space-type Western and it is sufficiently diversionary if you have nothing else to watch. The colorful group includes MacKenna (Gregory Peck), a Marshal who knows the way and who - at any cost - must be kept alive by Colorado (Omar Sharif), the outlaw Chief. For a movie of its "scope," it was clearly made on the cheap, with laughably phony "special effects" done with miniature models.

The climactic scenes are in Canyon de Chelly. Unfortunately, the plot is so convoluted it makes a pretzel look like a straight line. Filmed in 65mm intended for a Cinerama roadshow presentation at nearly 3 hours, the studio saw what it had and cut it to 2 hours with no roadshow.

A classic western plot, with the pace of a 1960s movie (at times, the pace is very slow!). A late 60's film stuck in a 30's mentality, Reviewed in the United States on June 23, 2019.

Viewers who know some of these places, especially Canyon de Chelly, will enjoy it the most. Reviewed in the United States on September 14, 2019. Below, more of my impressions, with some limited SPOILERS.

Great location photography mixed with not quite convincing studio sets.

The effects may be rudimentary, but they work and are enough to make the films story acceptable.

The print here at Amazon is WIDESCREEN and good. ‘Mackenna's Gold’ (1969) is a challenging western.
